electromagnetic spectrum
- Electromagnetic Spectrum is the range of wavelengths or frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends
Information : The Electromagnetic Spectrum combines and differs of a range of wavelengths or frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends. The Electromagnetic Spectrum is a graph ( which is displayed below) displays the amplitude and wavelength of machines. The shorter the wavelength the more energy required to function the machine. There are also visible colours from shortest to longest wavelengths. They are: violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. Ultraviolet radiation has a shorter wavelength than the visible violet light. Infrared radiation has a longer wavelength than visible red light. If you were to say which colours in the visible light spectrum have more or most energy it would be that the human eye is in fact not capable of "seeing" radiation with different wavelengths outside the visible spectrum. Cellular phone signals are carried by radio waves, which are like visible light waves only much slower and longer. Examples of what speed electromagnetic waves travel at is approximately 3x10 m/s - (meaning per second) the fastest speed possible. When electromagnetic waves travel through matter (for e.g, light through air), it travels slower. Types of electromagnetic energy in which are visible to the eye can conceive of wavelengths roughly between 390 and 750 nanometers (being one thousand millionth of a metre) is visible to the human eye. Also referred to as, 'visible light'. Electromagnetic when traveling through matter the speed will vary only slightly depending on the density of the matter.
Types of electromagnetic energies from least energetic to most energetic : 1 being least energetic.
Ultraviolet light - 5
X-rays - 6
Radio and television waves - 1
Gamma rays - 7
Infra-red radiation - 3
Visible lights - 4
Microwaves - 2
A use for each of the waves and wavelength for each wave :
Ultraviolet - Although most Ultraviolet waves are used for hospitality wether it be lamps in a hospital or in a food or drug company another use of UV would be when we expose our skin to UVB, which our bodies need. The wavelength is 10nm - 400nm,
X-rays- X-rays are used for medical purposes to analyse bones inside our body (e.g if they may be broken) instead of cutting inside our flesh. The wavelength is 0.01nm - 10nm.
Radio - Radio waves used to carry mobile phone signals. The wavelength is 600m - 200m.
Gamma rays - Used to kill cancer cells and to sterilise (to make something free from bacteria) medical equipment. The wavelength is 0.0001nm.
Radiation - It is used in medicine, academics, and industry, as well as for generating electricity. The wavelength is all these combined, as all of these are different 'radiations'.
Visible Lights - This is used for lasers, and lasers and used for discs and DVD players. The wavelength is 400nm.
Microwaves - Although most Microwaves are used just for cooking, in some cases microwaves can be used to treat health problems better than drugs. They are used primarily as an alternative to surgery. The wavelength is 187mm - 10m.
Infa red waves - Used for changing the channel on your TV remote. The wavelength is 700nm - 1mm.
